EDME 523 Acquiring English in School

This course examines theories and research related to the acquisition of English as a second language in K-12 school contexts. Many diverse factors relevant to English learning in K-12 schools will be addressed, such as: learner differences, the role and ramifications of culture, and past and current government policies. The significance teacher dispositions will be addressed, with reflection through the lens of faith or values. The overall objective of the course is to give students a firm grounding in both language acquisition theory and how the learning of English as a second language in K-12 education has been envisioned through policy and enacted through practice. This course lays the foundation for future course learning and field work in teaching English and academic content to English learners.
