ATC 511 Psychopathology and Diagnosis

This course provides students with the opportunity to identify major categories of mental illness using the DSM and/or the ICD, engage in the diagnostic process, understand possible art-based indicators of mental disorders, review commonly prescribed psychopharmacological medications, and to recognize the effects that culture, society, and crisis have on individuals with mental illness. Additional areas of coverage include ongoing conceptual developments in neuroscience. Includes assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and prevention of mental and emotional disorders and dysfunctional behavior. Students will understand the basic diagnostic process and the major categories and criteria of mental disorders, corresponding treatments, and commonly prescribed psychopharmacological medications.
