Outcomes
In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:
1. Demonstrate safe working habits in the welding lab.
2. Demonstrate the proper set up and breakdown of an oxyacetylene pipe cutting station.
3. Choose the right size cutting tip to cut and bevel 6 inch, 8 inch and 12 inch schedule 40 pipe.
4. Demonstrate proper use of manual pipe bevellers cutting 37.5 degree bevels on 6 inch, 8 inch and 12 inch schedule 40 pipe.
5. Demonstrate safe use of angle grinders and end grinders while cleaning and prepping pipe cuts and bevels.
6. Demonstrate proper fitting techniques to assure a sound weld joint for making quality welds on carbon steel pipe.
7. Choose the right electrode (MIG WIRE) using the American Welding Society’s A5.18 and A5 20 Specification Book.
8. Demonstrate proper welding technique using a Gas Metal Arc welding machine while welding in the vertical down position.
9. Demonstrate proper welding technique using a Gas Metal Arc welding machine while welding in the vertical up position.
10. Set the volts and amps on the wire feed unit to achieve sound welds on carbon steel pipe.
11. Visually inspect the completed weld coupon with the instructor using nondestructive inspection techniques and tools to perform inspection referencing the American Welding Society’s D1.1 and the American Petroleum Institute API 1104 Code Books for acceptance rejection criteria
12. Make repairs to welded pipe coupon if any.
13. Cut straps from welded pipe coupon using the oxyacetylene or plasma arc cutting stations. Reference American Welding Society’s D1.1 and the American Petroleum Institute’s API1104 code books for strap dimension’s
14. Clean straps with a grinder following the guide lines set forth in the American Welding Society’s D1.1 and the American Petroleum Institute’s API 1104 Code Book.
15. Destructive test weld straps with the instructor. The weld samples will be tested on site using the 50 Ton Guided Bend-Tensile Tester in the Weld Metallurgy Lab. The weld samples will be graded using the American Welding Society’s D1.1 and the American Petroleum Institute’s API 1104 Code Books.
