ART 2410 Ceramics I
This is an introductory course in ceramics. The student will utilize hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques in the creation sculptural and functional artworks. In addition, basic glaze application and kiln firing processes will be presented. The development of ideas and concepts are encouraged through theory, criticism, and historical reference. (2 lect., 4 lab) ARTS

- Elements and principles of design as they relate to three-dimensional works of art
- Hand-building with coils and slabs; wheel-throwing fundamentals
- Ceramic traditions through history as well as contemporary artists from diverse parts of the world
- Basic clay body and glaze analysis
- Basic gas and electric kiln operation
Outcomes
In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:
1. Apply basic construction techniques using a combination of historical and modern methods - such as coiling and pinching, and wheel-throwing
2. Define the processes that a project must go through from its green unfired state to a finished work of art
3. Critique their work as well as others using the elements and principles of design
4. Use historical and contemporary works of art from diverse cultures to glean information and insight into their own work
