ART 2482 Special Projects: Painting
This course is designed for the student wishing to explore a single aspect or topic of painting in depth. The course will be offered for 1, 2, or 3 credits depending on the topic and semester. Topics will be identified in the current schedule and will include areas such as encaustic, oil, or watercolor. This course may be repeated for a maximum of six credits applicable toward graduation. (.5 lect., 1 lab/1 lect., 2 lab/ 1.5 lect., 3 lab) (Max 6)
Major Topics
- Correct use of encaustic
- Composition and design.
- Technical integration of mixed media with encaustic.
Outcomes
In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:
1. The student will learn and demonstrate safe practices with the use of encaustic materials; understand the role that various supports and grounds play in encaustic painting
2. The student will learn how to fuse layers of wax to create translucent and opaque glazes.
3. The student will learn to create soft and hard edges through various techniques including stencils.
4. Image manipulation through collage, monotype, and image transfer will be explored.
5. Oil paint will be explored as an additive medium with the encaustic.
6. Research paper and presentation of an artist’s work (artist to research may be assigned)
7. Final encaustic painting demonstrating the use of at least 3 techniques studied.

As this is a brief studio class attendance every day is extremely important. Late for the beginning of class or leaving early is considered an absence for that day. If you cannot attend for any part of this 3 day course, please make arrangements with the instructor to make up the work. Depending on the part of the course missed, the instructor will notify the student if it is possible to make up the work and still pass the course.
