Chinese Studies (B.A.)
Program Overview
The Chinese Studies major offers a variety of courses in the study of Chinese language and culture. Introductory and intermediate level courses focus on grammar, conversation, reading, writing and culture. Advanced level courses include continued acquisition of Chinese language skills and extensive cultural content.
Program Learning Outcomes
Graduates from Messiah’s Chinese Studies program can:

Identify relevant historical (political, religious and economic) events in the geographical areas in which the target language is spoken.

Describe cultural trends for the geographical areas in which the target language is spoken.

Recognize syntactic phonetic structures in the target language.
-
Define important literary periods and genres.
-
Engage in purposeful reading and textual interpretation of literary and informational texts in the target language.

Find, assess and utilize secondary sources.
-
Engage in literary analysis and critical interpretation of texts in the target language.
-
Document according to MLA standards.

Write thesis driven essays about topics pertaining to language, literature, linguistics and culture.
-
Communicate in spoken form with native speakers of the target language.
-
Communicate in written form with native speakers of the target language.
-
Identify and locate career/employment options and opportunities.
-
Identify and locate continuing education options and opportunities as graduate programs.
-
Articulate the integration of their Christian Faith with the academic and professional field of Foreign Languages.
Major Requirements
Complete the following for your major:
Six credits from the following:
Fifteen additional credits during a semester in China (15 credits)
Students should confirm with the Department of Modern Languages that the courses that they select are approved for the Chinese Studies Major.
12-15 credits of Chinese language
0-3 credits of Chinese culture
Note: Students must complete a minimum of 36 credits in the major.
