MLS 419 Immunohematology
Study of the of the theoretical and technical aspects of human blood groups and their clinical significance. Techniques used for detection and identification of antibodies, compatibility testing, current transfusion practices and component transfusion. The course also covers hemolytic disease of the newborn, complex transfusion service problem-solving, as well as donor screening, donor blood collection, and processing and storage of blood components. Immunohematology laboratory provides instruction and experience with techniques and methods used for the blood group typing, antibody screening and identification and compatibility testing and transfusion. Advanced procedures in DAT testing, elutions and absorptions. Pre-and post-natal testing of newborns and mothers including Rho(D) Immune Globulin work-ups.
Prerequisite
Student must be in the Medical Laboratory Science program.
