SWA1070 Applied Abnormal Psychology

This course is designed to be a fundamental orientation to abnormal psychology with an emphasis on applied practice in mental health and behavioral health.  The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders V-TR (2022) is used as the organizing framework for reviewing major mental disorders.  The course will focus on the identification and description of mental disorders, and what is known (and not known) about their social context and etiology (Biopsychosocial).  Issues related to culture and diversity will be discussed as it relates to assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and stabilization of specific mental disorders.  The course approaches abnormal psychology and psychopathology from a psychiatric rehabilitation model of empowerment, competence, and recovery to align with social work values and contemporary social work practice.
