MKT2050 Public Relations

The goal of this course is to provide students with a foundation for understanding, exploring, and experiencing the principles, practices, and theories of public relations. Public relations (PR) is an applied communication profession that studies how organizations establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with their publics through ethical, strategic, and culturally sensitive communication. This class will include information about the history of public relations, the emergence of public relations as a part of integrated communications, and how public relations can positively and negatively affect communities and organizations. Specifically, the course will cover the following areas: history and functions of public relations, professional ethics and legal issues, PR communication models and processes, the relationships among PR, marketing, and media, real world case studies, global and cultural influences on perceptions, and how public relations impact public opinion and organizational reputation. Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to define public relations professional practice of communications; apply ethics and law to public relations practice; describe major theories and communication models of PR; identify public relations as a career; and recognize the social, cultural, and organizational effects of public relations.
