In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:
1. Identify the legal responsibilities and scope of practice for the medical assistant.
2. Explore the Patient’s Bill of Rights and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) protocols related to confidentiality and the patient record.
3. Describe the principles of effective communication with patients, families, and coworkers.
4. Assess how personal values and beliefs may have an impact on professional performance when working with diverse populations.
5. Demonstrate competency in preparing professional medical office correspondence.
6. Demonstrate how to set up appointment schedules and manage referrals.
7. Analyze inventory control systems used to maintain office and medical supplies.
8. Demonstrate the correct use of medical office software applications.
9. Manage accounts receivable and accounts payable in a medical office setting.
10. Examine the process of a physician-based insurance claim beginning with collecting patient information through receipt of payment.
11. Examine the role of the patient navigator in guiding patients through the health care system.
