DNTA 1910 Dental Radiography

This course presents a study of dental radiographic equipment and radiation safety. The student will practice exposing, sequencing, and evaluating dental radiographic images. Additionally, the student will explore the concepts of preventing and responding to medical emergencies in a dental office. Basic life support for the healthcare provider will be taught. The student will job shadow in a dental office to gain a better understanding of the duties of the dental assistant. On completion, the student is eligible to apply for a Wyoming dental assistant radiograph permit. (2 lect., 2 lab)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Evaluate the dangers and benefits of using dental radiographs.

2. Describe the components and proper care of dental radiographic equipment.

3. Demonstrate appropriate oral radiographic technique, including processing and duplicating.

4. Discuss quality assurance in the dental care setting.

5. Perform infection control practices required for dental imaging.

6. Evaluate diagnostic dental radiographs.

7. Describe the responsibilities of the dental assistant in preventing and responding to an emergency in a dental office.

8. Complete a radiation safety course examination approved by the Wyoming Board of Dental Examiners and application for a Wyoming dental assistant radiograph permit.

9. Participate in basic life support training.

10. Observe a dental assistant performing his or her duties in an assigned dental office.
