ENGL 2310 American Literature I

This survey of American writing begins with the literatures of native peoples, of exploration and settlement, and extends through the develop- ment of a distinct American literature, to the middle of the nineteenth century. Written works are studied within the context of social, poli- tical, and economic changes. Through reading, writing, and discussion of texts and biography, students consider how ideas and movements in- fluenced and were influenced by American litera- ture. This course is offered on an infrequent basis; check with English Department for avail- ability. Prerequisites: Completion of ENGL 1020 or permission of the instructor. (3 lect.) HUM
