ELAP 1555 Electrical Apprenticeship 3A

This course is the fifth in a series of eight courses at the electrical apprentice level. This course meets the related apprenticeship training requirements of the State of Wyoming, Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety. It is not required that students be participating in an apprenticeship program to enroll in this course, but it is recommended. The curriculum for this course corresponds to the level 1 requirements of the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). This course continues instruction in the National Electrical Code, and instructs students in the topics of load calculators (branch and feeder circuits), conductor selection and calculations, overcurrent protection, raceway, box and fitting fill requirements, wiring devices, and equipment distribution. Students can expect to complete a minimum of 3 hours coursework outside of class each week. (Related apprenticeship training hours: 64 hours lecture - 48 hours outside coursework) (4 lect.)

  • Load Calculators
  • Conductor Selection and Calculations
  • Overcurrent Protection
  • Wiring Devices
  • Raceway, Box and Fitting Fill
  • Equipment Distribution

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Calculate loads for single-phase and three-phase branch circuits.

2. Size branch circuit overcurrent protection devices (circuit breakers and fuses) for noncontinuous and continuous duty circuits applying derating factors to size branch circuits.

3. Calculate ampacity for single-phase and three-phase loads and calculate residential cooking equipment loads.

4. Select branch circuit conductors and overcurrent protection devices for electric heat, air conditioning equipment, motors, and welders.

5. Select electrical conductors for specific applications and size conductors for the load.

6. Calculate voltage drop in both single-phase and three-phase applications.

7. Derate and select conductors for fill, temperature, and voltage drop.

8. Explain short circuit current, fault currents, interrupting ratings, and other considerations relating to overcurrent protection.

9. Determine let-through current values (peak and rms) when current-limiting overcurrent devices are used.

10. Select and size overcurrent.

11. Size and select raceways, outlet boxes, and pull and junction boxes.

12. Calculate conduit fill using a percentage of the trade size conduit inside diameter (ID).

13. Calculate the required bending radius in boxes and cabinets.

14. Select, size, determine maximum load, and install wiring devices.

15. Explain the types and purposes of grounding wiring devices.

16. Describe the purpose of switchgear, the four general classifications of circuit breakers, the major circuit breaker ratings, switchgear construction, metering layouts, wiring requirements, the visual and mechanical inspections and electrical tests associated with low-voltage and medium-voltage cables, metal-enclosed busways, metering and instrumentation, and ground fault relay system and explain how to test it.

17. Explain NEC, NEMA, NFPA, and safety requirements pertaining to each major topic.
