EDEL 1505 Planning & Dev of After-School Programs

This course is the second course in a series of three courses leading to a credential in after-school programs designed for those interested in working in after-school programs with school-aged children. Topics include learning environments, scheduling and formats, activity planning and implementation, special events, promoting social emotional development, providing homework and support and professional ethics. Prerequisites: Completion of EDEL-1500. (3 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Describe strategies for creating and maintaining a safe program environment

2. Compare strategies for promoting a healthy, balanced lifestyle among children

3. Design attractive, inviting indoor and outdoor environments

4. Develop individual interest areas that offer equipment and materials that support a variety of different activity options

5. Examine systematic strategies and tools for doing short-term and long-range activity planning that encourages student involvement

6. Develop an understanding of how reasoning skills can be linked to creative thinking skills

7. Develop an understanding of how school-age children benefit from special events

8. Compare how positive character traits help children interact with others in healthy ways

9. Demonstrate strategies for planning and implementing a homework support program

10. Develop strategies for structuring and adapting elements of school-age program environments and activities to accommodate children with Attention Deficit Disorder
