EDEL 1510 Partnerships in After-School Programs

This course is the third course in a series of three courses leading to a credential in after-school and youth development designed for those interested in working with after-school programs with school-age children. Topics include creating quality programs, developing policy, budgets and marketing strategies, current trends and issues and collaborating with families. The students will also gain intensive, supervised experience in an after-school program setting. During the semester, students are required to work/volunteer a total of 30 hours in a directed field experience at an instructor-approved site. A current Wyoming Substitute teaching permit or completed background check are needed before placement. See instructor for appropriate forms and required fee. Prerequisite: Completion of EDEL-1505. (2 lect., 30 hours of practicum required during the semester)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Identify and explore the components of quality programs and the importance of making a commitment to continuous quality improvement

2. Identify systematic processes for developing goal-based action plans and creating a continuous cycle of evaluation and planning

3. Analyze the essential components of effective financial management

4. Develop tools and strategies for marketing services effectively

5. Investigate current status of U.S. children and youth in relation to after-school programs in America

6. Summarize strategies for linking the developmental needs of early adolescents to activity planning in after-school programs

7. Create strategies for creating and sustaining successful collaborations in local communities

8. Discuss the use of developmental checklists and anecdotal records as the foundation for creating individual portfolios with school-age children
