COMM 2310 Public Relations

The course covers the history of public relations, its theoretical basis as well as the legal and ethical environment. The core issues and process that underlie public relations are detailed, as well as the descriptions of the publics that are the objects of these efforts. A summary of the practice of public relations, the emerging trends of the profession, and issues with crisis management are discussed. Case studies provide opportunities for student discussion and interaction with concepts. Prerequisite: Completion of COMM 1030 or COMM 1040. (3 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Explain the role and functions of public relations in an industrialized society.

2. Explain the historical evolution and theoretical basis of public relations.

3. Identify and discuss the ethical and legal responsibilities related to public relations.

4. Discuss and explain each of the basic process of public relations: research, planning, communication, and evaluation.

5. Examine, discuss and apply through teamwork activity different strategies for each of the basic process of public relations: research, planning, communication and evaluation.

6. Explain the practice of public relations activity in public affairs such as, government relations, nonprofit organizations, and corporate public relations.

7. Identify, evaluate and explain how to deal with public relations crisis and the effects of social medias.

8. Identify future trends and various career opportunities in the field.
