SERV 231 Service, Mission & Change

Comprehensive introduction to the field of service-learning, with an emphasis on the role of the church in service, social justice, missions, and change. Topics addressed include benefits and challenges of short-term missions, cross-cultural relationships, power and privilege, racism, servanthood, and using systems thinking of approaching social change. This course employs service-learning pedagogy; therefore, students will participate in a service project during the semester and will engage in guided reflection to apply theory and develop increased self-awareness. Students may participate in an additional summer of service, in which financial assistance is available through a grant process via the Agape Center.
