EDUC 2001 Online Course Design

This course introduces the student to best practices in online course design. It focuses on up-to-date research regarding online instructor andragogy. Students learn how to utilize course and unit objectives in relation to choosing appropriate instructional materials and designing assessment strategies. The student studies how to apply the best elements of course design. Practical experience in the use of resources and tools, such as an Learning Management System, is included. Experience with curriculum development as evidenced by college teaching experience is recommended. Prerequisite: Instructor Permission. (2 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Recognize the need to design the course from the students’ point of view.

2. Organize course content and alter appropriately for web-based learning.

3. Utilize tools to make the overall design of the course clear to the student at the beginning of the course.

4. Design with content in mind, including the steps to chunking content and creating transitions between content chunks.

5. Create an interactive lesson for a particular concept or module in your course.

6. Utilize tools, including a learning management system, to foster student engagement, to facilitate group work, and to design learning guides.

7. Access the Quality Matters Rubric and apply it to one unit of a course.

8. Document course outcomes and develop appropriate course and unit learning objectives.

9. Describe and use assessment strategies to measure effective learning and evaluate student progress that includes reference to learning objectives, brainstorming new ways to teach course outcomes, and developing new teaching options not limited to the classroom.

10. Describe the online instructional strategies necessary for the development of sound critical thinking in your online course.

11. Select appropriate instructional materials that are sufficiently comprehensive to achieve stated learning objectives and outcomes.

12. Access institutional services online and provide that access to students in an LMS.

13. Design all course components to be accessible to all students.

14. Design one unit of an online course which

14a. Handles different learning styles in the classroom.

14b. Creates an online community, including fostering meaningful interaction between the instructor and students, among students, and between students and course materials, including the use of learning guides.

14c. Designs with the future in mind, including flexibility of teaching schedules, revisions to textbooks, rapid updates to content, and addition of components to the course.

14d. Fosters student engagement, including facilitating asynchronous discussions in an online course.

Grading Criteria: Your final course grade will be determined using the following criteria: A = 90 - 100 percent B = 80 - 89 percent C = 70 - 79 percent D = 60 - 69 percent F = less than 60 percent
