In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:
1. Demonstrate professional behavior appropriate in a medical office setting
2. Describe communication styles
3. Recognize and adhere to HIPAA rules
4. Summarize and incorporate Patient’s Bill of Rights into professional practice
5. Review ethical behaviors, differentiate between personal and professional ethics, and identify the effects that personal values and beliefs may have on professional performance
6. Demonstrate an understanding of information technology applications in healthcare
7. Compose professional business letters, demonstrating effective writing and communication skills
8. Manage patient scheduling, including appointments, admissions, and procedures using professional telephone and communication techniques
9. Perform office inventory
10. Utilize an EMR and demonstrate the use and management of electronic and paper medical records
11. Use current diagnostic coding systems
12. Demonstrate the use of procedural coding systems
13. Discuss types and models of insurance and apply managed care policies and procedures, including guidelines, preauthorization, verification and precertification, and associated documentation
14. Discuss the role of front office staff as patient navigator, and the referral process using community resources related to healthcare
15. Explore accounts receivable, billing and payment procedures, basic bookkeeping, and provider fee schedules
16. Define risk management, compliance reporting, and types of professional insurance (i.e., liability, personal injury, professional malpractice)
17. Complete basic life support certification training
