EDEL 2280 Literature for Children

Wide reading and discussion of the literature for children is emphasized. Books that have won recognition as distinguished contributions to the American literature for children are examined. The selection of books for school, home and public library is considered. Besides becoming acquainted with a wide sampling of children's literature, students also establish criteria for evaluation. Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 1010. (3 lect.) HUM

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

Discuss the history of children’s literature and the role history plays in shaping current literature.

Analyze a selection of children’s books from the various genres, including poetry and verse and social and cultural diversity.

Examine the role art plays in creating meaning in picture books.

Apply children’s literature to at least two teaching/learning strategies.

Compare the different genres represented in literature for children and their worth in education.

Evaluate professional sources related to children’s literature.
