AECL 2025 Horticultural Science

This course examines the propagation, growth, development, and utilization of horticultural plants. The student will study plant classification, anatomy, interactions with the environment, and genetic improvement through lecture presentations and laboratory experiences.  (2 lect., 4 lab)

  • Types and functions of leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits

  • Plant/water relations

  • Basic genetics

  • Plant names and groupings

  • Effects of climate and seasonality on plant growth

  • Photosynthesis, transpiration, respiration, and reproduction

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Classify plants by family and function.

2. Describe how plants reproduce, grow, and develop.

3. Explain how nutrients are cycled through plants, roots, and the environment.

4. Explain how environmental factors affect plant growth.

5. Describe how genetics influence plant characteristics.
