Credit for Prior Learning
Central Wyoming College recognizes that students acquire knowledge in many settings. Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is the process CWC uses to validate college-level knowledge and competencies gained through industry, military, or other educational experiences outside the traditional classroom. CWC offers students several ways to earn CPL: by professional certification, professional associations, portfolio assessment, and many forms of direct examination. The following criteria are applicable to CPL:
1. Students are limited to earning a maximum of 75% of the credits in their declared program through CPL and Transfer Credits.
2. None of these methods for alternative credit can be used for financial aid, scholarships, and athletic/activity eligibility.
3. Credits earned through Credit by Exam might not be accepted for transfer at another institution.
4. With the exception of Credit by Exam and Portfolio Assessment all CPL will be shown as Transfer Credit on the student’s Program of Study, but will not be reflected on the student’s official CWC transcript and will not transfer into the CWC GPA.
5. Students must be admitted to CWC and declare a degree-seeking program or certificate to be eligible for CPL.
6. CPL cannot duplicate other credit awarded.
7. Credit may be granted only for documented learning which falls within the normal curriculum of the college or ties the prior experience to theories and content of the relevant academic field(s), and are part of the student’s designated program of study at CWC.
8. The Registrar will evaluate Credit by Exam credits from other institutions for transfer credit on a case by case basis.
