MEDA 1800 Phlebotomy Principles in Practice

This course introduces the student to the laboratory tests and procedures routinely performed in a medical facility or medical office setting. Topics include fundamental principles of medical lab practice, disposal of biohazard materials, specimen collection, diagnostic testing, safety, and quality control methods. (1.5 lect., 3 lab)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

Identify critical Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) standards for the medical laboratory, including standard precautions, safety, and biohazard waste procedures.

Utilize standard precautions in accordance with CDC guidelines.

Describe the purpose of safety data sheets.

Perform quality control measures in accordance with established guidelines.

Demonstrate specimen collection in accordance with current practice standards.

Provide patient teaching about specimen collection, with consideration for patient rights, comfort, and potentially sensitive subject matter.

Perform Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-waived laboratory tests.

Demonstrate appropriate follow-up for normal and abnormal test results.

Demonstrate the procedure for recording lab results in a patient’s medical record.

Obtain basic life support certification.
