SPED 562 Dyslexia & Orton Gillingham Techniques
This course provides an understanding of dyslexia and working knowledge of the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading. Students will identify and study the characteristics, causes, assessment methods, and research related to dyslexia. Orton-Gillingham is a phonetically based, sequential, structured, and multisensory approach effective in the remediation of reading, spelling, and writing of students with dyslexia. Students will analyze research related to effective instruction for students with dyslexia and will be provided with an overview of teaching an individual with dyslexia using the Orton-Gillingham approach. Students are required to complete 8 hours of observation in an approved Orton-Gillingham classroom or after-school setting.
