LAW-8076 Sports and Entertainment Transactions
This course explores the legal, business, and strategic considerations involved in structuring and negotiating transactions in the sports and entertainment industries. Through a combination of case studies, contract analysis, and simulated negotiations, students will gain practical experience with key deal documents and concepts, including talent agreements, endorsement and sponsorship deals, production and licensing agreements, team and league governance structures, intellectual property rights, and athlete and artist representation.Students will examine the roles of lawyers, agents, managers, and other stakeholders in transactional settings, with attention to industry-specific norms, ethical issues, and regulatory frameworks such as NCAA rules, league collective bargaining agreements, and union relationships. The course emphasizes practical skills development, including drafting and negotiating contract provisions, issue-spotting, and understanding deal dynamics in high-profile, high-stakes environments. Guest speakers from the sports and entertainment industries may supplement classroom instruction. This course is open to 1L students only.
