Course Modalities
In Person –instruction that occurs face-to-face real-time in a physical classroom
HyFlex –F2F instruction (instructor and a limited number of students in class) while simultaneously teaching remote students in real time (synchronously). All students have the opportunity to participate in real time; flexible students can view recordings of synchronous sessions; all students can access materials through Canvas. Group and class assignments may be synchronous and/or asynchronous.
Hybrid – Between 30 – 60% of the course content and activities are offered online. Hybrid instruction replaces some of the in-class time of the F2F or Hyflex classroom with technology-mediated outside-of-class activities. Two possible models:
- Class is divided in half: Students meet F2f on alternate days or weeks and complete assignments on their own or in groups.
- Class structure is a combination of F2F and Online: Students meet F2F for approximately half or 2/3 of the course meetings and complete the remainder of their course work online.
Online – Fully-planned and supported through faculty and course development initiatives.
- Asynchronous: 100% online. All teaching and learning activities are conducted online and any direct instruction is recorded and available for view later. Instructors may offer synchronous office hours.
- Synchronous: 100% web-based instruction occurs in real time without time delay.
Definitions of terms
