Employment Opportunities

Interventional Radiology (IR) Technologists face an exceptionally strong job market with diverse employment structures, robust compensation packages, and steady projected career growth. According to occupational outlook data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the overall employment demand for radiologic and MRI technologists is projected to increase steadily, driven largely by an aging population requiring minimally invasive medical treatments.

Career Path Notes

1. The student must be certified and registered in Radiography by the ARRT. (In some instances, specific certifications from the NMTCB or ARDMS may also be accepted).

2. The student must complete 16 hours of structured education activities that correspond with the exam content specifications for your chosen credential (CI or VI) within the 24 months before applying for the exam. These courses cover topics such as contrast media, fluoroscopy, pharmacology, and patient care.

3. The student must document clinical repetitions in a specialized logging tool:

     a. Vascular-Interventional (VI): Log a minimum of 200 repetitions of vascular interventional procedures, covering specific procedural categories. The student can log a maximum of 10 procedures per day.

     b. Cardiac-Interventional (CI): Log a minimum number of repetitions for cardiac catheterization and associated procedures.

4. After completing clinical logs and education requirements, the student may apply to take the ARRT post primary examination in either Cardiac-Interventional Radiography or Vascular-Interventional Radiography.
