SWA1100 Trauma and Resiliency

This foundation-level course addresses the core components of trauma, vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, crisis intervention, compassion fatigue, and the long-term impact of chronic traumatic exposure and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on individuals, families, and communities. Students will be introduced to the models of assessment and the biological, physiological, social, cognitive, somatic, emotional, cultural, developmental, and spiritual aspects of chronic stress and trauma. The course facilitates working through a trauma-informed lens and discusses coping mechanisms of trauma-exposed clients, patients, and helping professionals. An emphasis is placed on the role of resiliency in healing and mitigating vicarious trauma and burnout of medical professionals, social workers, mental health clinicians, addiction counselors, law enforcement, and others in the helping professions.
