SOWK 2000 Introduction to Social Work

This is an introductory course required of all Social Work Students, but also appropriate for students interested in the field of Human Services. The course is designed to present the profession of social work as well as provide an understanding of social welfare programs as part of our country's social system. (3 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Describe the various fields of social work practice.

2. Explain varying views of social welfare and recognize the impact and role of social policies on client systems, workers, and agencies.

3. Apply critical thinking skills within the context of social work theory, principle, and practice

4. Define that social work values

5. Explain the NASW Code of Ethics

6. Define the social work profession and guide practice.

7. Describe the positive value of diversity

8. List the various forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination

9. Discuss the importance of change that advances social and economic justice

10. Explain the importance of theoretical knowledge and skills of generalist social work practice with systems of all sizes

11. Describe the history of social work, current structure, and issues
