CHEM 1055 Chemical Problem Solving II
This is a one-semester course designed to accompany CHEM 1030, for those seeking supplemental instruction in chemical problem solving. Emphasis will be on problems involving equilibria, kinetics, thermochemistry and electrochemistry. (Offered in spring) Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in CHEM 1030. (1 lect.)
Major Topics
- Dimensional analysis
- Problems solving strategies
- Chemical equilibrium
- Acid-base chemistry
- Oxidation-reduction reactions
- Chemical kinetics
- Electrochemistry
- Thermodynamics
Outcomes
In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:
1. Develop skills in chemical problems solving.
2. Improve ""group work" skills for solving chemical problems.
3. Solve word problems using chemical equilibrium.
4. Apply the principles of acid-base chemistry in chemical problems.
5. Solve complex oxidation-reduction reactions.
6. Solve chemical problems at the intersection of chemical kinetics and equilibrium.
7. Apply the principles of electrochemistry to quantitative electrochemistry problems.
8. Predict the spontaneity of reactions using free energy, entropy and enthalpy.
