ART 2310 Sculpture I

This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of sculpture. The student will investigate traditional and contemporary concepts through a variety of media. The development of ideas and concepts is encouraged through theory, criticism, and historical reference. (2 lect., 4 lab) ARTS

  • Elements of visual art (line, shape, texture, color, form)
  • Principles of visual art (emphasis, harmony, unity, balance, movement, variety, scale, proportion, rhythm)
  • History and process of subtractive processes (stone, wood, plaster)
  • History and process of additive processes (welding, clay, glass)
  • History and process of casting (bronze, iron, aluminum, plaster)
  • History and process of assemblage
  • Historical and contemporary cultures, eras, and artists of the world

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Create a series of sculptures inspired by a variety of cultures and artists of the world.

2. Create a series of sculptures using a variety of processes including but not limited to: casting, additive, subtractive, collaborative, and assemblage processes.

3. Create a series of sculptures choosing a variety of media including but not limited to: clay, wood, plaster, metals, glass, and stone.

4. Analyze the artwork of historical and contemporary artists, fellow students, and their own artwork.

5. Create artwork applying the elements and principles of design.

6. Make aesthetic and intellectual judgments on sculptural themes.
