Outcomes
In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:
1. Recognize the structures, processes, behaviors and issues attendant with our local, state and federal correctional system
2. Recognize the major components and values of the American correctional system
3. Describe the historical developments in American penology and changes over time and the relationship of corrections institutions to other political, legal, economic and societal institutions
4. Analyze statistical data relevant to individuals and institutions associated with the correctional system and identify trends
5. Define the basic structure of the American correctional system as well as the roles of the individuals, both correctional officials and inmates within the system
6. Compare and contrast the major philosophical and practical operating aspects of the American correctional system today
7. Discuss, examine, and interpret issues dealing with topics relevant to goals and objectives of the course
8. Analyze current and future correctional issues, locally, nationally and internationally from the viewpoints of all participants
9. Explain and illustrate the workings and interactions of the criminal justice system and the American society and the role of corrections in that system
