CRMJ 2135 Criminal Investigation II

This course examines the value and significance of various types of physical evidence. Students will be shown how to identify, collect, and preserve physical evidence at the scene of the crime, and the procedures, techniques, and laboratory methods used in the handling, examination and presentation of physical evidence will be identified. Evidence typically found at various crime scenes and required law enforcement actions will be studied. (3 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Describe the historical developments in criminal investigation techniques

2. Recognize the value and significance of various types of physical evidence in relation to criminal activity

3. Describe the contemporary methods of investigation for criminal prosecution

4. Explain and illustrate examples of scientific and forensic investigative methods and analysis

5. Identify and explain the major investigative techniques available concerning crimes against persons and property

6. Discuss factors involved in the criminal charging decision

7. Distinguish among the sources of information available to investigators, including, physical evidence, people and records

8. Illustrate how the scientific method can be employed, and induction and deduction used in reconstructing criminal events

9. Differentiate between major crimes and the investigatory techniques best suited to the investigation of each

10. Assess criminal investigation procedures

11. Describe investigative techniques and standards as applied to selected crimes
