EDEC 5250 Legal Issues in Early Childhood Special Education

The student will evaluate the legal issues surrounding the education of young children with disabilities. The intent and implications of P.L. 99457 will be explored and examined to better assist the specialist in serving children with disabilities and their families. Prerequisite: Completion of EDEX 2484. (2 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

Review the state and federal laws, legislation, and regulations relative to early intervention and education of young children with disabilities, delays, and/or risks and their families.

Discuss issues and trends in special education, including legislation and litigation, including legislative and judicial mandates related to education and special education.

Describe current regulations and procedures governing special education to include individualized education program (IEP) development and individualized family service plan (IFSP).

Compile sources of information regarding legislation and litigation in special education and their impact on current practices and procedures.
