BIO1050 Principles of Biology and Chemistry

This introductory non-lab science course covers basic concepts in chemistry and biology.  The chemistry portion of this course will include topics such as matter and elements, periodic table, atomic structure, chemical bonds, polar and nonpolar molecules, water and solutions, and acids and bases.  Chemical reactions and organic molecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids will also be discussed.  The biology portion of the course will discuss cell structure and function, including an introduction to cell membranes, organelles, protein synthesis, energy metabolism and cell reproduction (mitosis).  A description of the structure and function of epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous tissues will also be presented.  Students will be introduced to the organ systems of the body and their functions.  The process of homeostasis including negative and positive feedback systems will also be introduced.
