STAT 2070 Intro Statistics for the Social Sciences

The goal of this course is to present the central ideas of descriptive statistics and statistical inference, as applied to questions in the social sciences. Topics include graphs, averages, sampling, estimation, hypothesis-testing, and relationships between variables. Associated computer skills will also be introduced. Students earning credit in STAT 2070 may not earn credit in STAT 2050. Prerequisite: Completion of MATH 1000 or MATH 1400. (4 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Find and use descriptive and numerical statistics (using such items as graphs and frequency tables, measures of central tendency and measures of variance, z-scores, etc.) to explore and analyze data.

2. Solve basic probability problems, including finding probability, and applying counting principles.

3. Construct probability distributions to predict probable outcomes.

4. Apply the conceptsof normal distribution and the central limit theorem.

5. Test hypotheses about population parameters.

6. Apply concepts of inferential statistics to estimate parameters, compare means and variances.

7. Find correlation for variables and use regression to describe the relationship between variables.

8. Use z, t, and chi-square distributions appropriately.
