ORTM 2100 Mountain Bike Skills Instructor 1

This course prepares experienced mountain bikers to be professional guides through the development of outdoor leadership, group management, bike handling skills, and error detection and correction.
The student will learn to plan and lead group rides, develop emergency action plans, and coach beginner and intermediate level mountain bikers on a variety of trail types. Certification requires successful completion of a standardized written and practical exam. Prerequisites: Completion of OEAC 1288. (4 Lab)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Demonstrate error detection and correction for bike handling skills on beginner to intermediate trails.

2. Create a comprehensive logistics and emergency action plan for a group ride.

3. Model competency in body positioning, braking, climbing, descending, switching, high and low speed cornering, and navigating switchbacks, rock gardens, roll downs, and other technical features.

4. Successful completion of a standardized written certification exam.

5. Successful completion of a standardized practical exam by leading a model group ride which demonstrates coaching and risk management skills.
