MUSC 2070 Individual Lessons:
MUSC 2070 provides sophomore-level instruction on a musical instrument for Music Majors. Through the study of different periods and styles of music, students learn music theory related to their instrument, performance technique, and the cultural/historical context of those works of music. Required video taping and recital performances give students an opportunity to evaluate their skills. A maximum of 4 credit hours of Applied Music may be used by the student whose area of emphasis is music certifiable toward the Associate of Arts degree in a single instrument or in voice. Students should practice a minimum of 12 hours/week. Prerequisite: Completion of
MUSC 1055 (2 credits) and permission of instructor for scheduling purposes only. (.5 lect, 1 lab for 1 credit, 1 lect., 2 lab for 2 credits). Baritone/Euphonium, Bass, Cello, Clarinet, Flute, French Horn, Guitar, Oboe, Percussion, Piano, Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba, Viola, Violin, Voice. Individualized instruction in various instruments is dependent upon availability of qualified instructors.

Outcomes
In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:
1. Describe and apply basic principles of music theory including notation, rhythm and dynamics.
2. Perform using proper technique for the instrument such as fingerings, breath control, and embouchure.
3. Research music, composers, and professional performance techniques of their instrument, and present this research to the music department.
4. Listen to and analyze a variety of styles of music for their particular instrument, making aesthetic judgments.
5. Evaluate music?s contribution to culture within its historical context.
6. Evaluate their individual performance using video and/or audio recordings of lessons and/or recitals.
7. Prepare for professional and transfer opportunities by creating an artistic portfolio and preparing for auditions.
8. Identify the daily operations involved in the course of musical promotion, self-management, and artistic development in the professional field of music.

Music studied by the student changes each semester giving the student opportunity to read, play, listen to and analyze music in different cultural / historical contexts. In addition, students expand their abilities in each of these areas of music study.
