MUSC 1000 Intro to Music

A course in music appreciation for the student with or without prior musical experience. It is designed to increase understanding and enjoyment of the music of western civilization, and to increase critical discrimination in listening to music of all types. Attendance at specified public performances is required. (3 lect.) HUM

  • Development of an attentive style of listening
  • Introduction and systematic study of the building blocks of music
  • Enhancing awareness of the main musical styles of selected western and non-western cultures

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Evaluate the influence of musical works on culture

2. Identify and describe the impact music has on the quality of life

3. Compare and contrast compositional characteristics and composers during various musical style periods

4. Examine stylistic characteristics of various musical periods through listening

Evaluation tools will include a research paper on instruments and a review of one live musical performance.
