MEDA 1720 Medical Assisting Fundamentals I

This course introduces the student to the theoretical concepts and practical applications associated with the clinical and laboratory responsibilities of the medical assistant. Online coursework provides the student with the knowledge and skills needed to assist healthcare providers with routine and emergent care of patients in ambulatory care settings. Topics include the principles of confidentiality, scope of practice, specialty practices, standard precautions, infection prevention and control, medical lab practice, specimen collection, diagnostic testing, and documentation. This course is for students enrolled in the Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program. Instructor permission is required. The student must maintain employment at an affiliated healthcare agency throughout enrollment in the course. (4 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Review the scope of practice and standards of care for the medical assistant.

2. Apply the principles of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to the clinical role of the medical assistant.

3. Describe the principles of standard precautions and infection control.

4. Identify the major components of a patient screening and the steps required to prepare the exam room and patient for examination.

5. Identify the fundamentals of vital signs and normal parameters.

6. Explain the benefits of proper body mechanics and ergonomics to promote health and safety of the patient and the provider.

7. Identify emergency situations in a medical office setting and how to respond in an appropriate manner.

8. Review Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations governing health and safety in a medical laboratory.

9. Examine safety data sheets and their purpose.

10. Identify the equipment and supplies used to collect, store, and process blood samples.

11. Describe specimen collection in accordance with current practice standards.

12. Explain the patient care measures utilized before, during, and after blood collection.

13. Describe appropriate follow-up and documentation for normal and abnormal test results.

The Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Certificate will be offered in collaboration with the Department of Labor. Participants will be vetted by the DOL. 2000-4000 employment hours  at an affiliated healthcare agency are required and will be monitored by the DOL. Participants must complete 20 credits at CWC.
