MEDA 1525 Clinical Role of the Medical Assist II

A continuation of MEDA 1520, this course provides the student with advanced theoretical concepts and skills associated with the clinical role of a medical assistant. Emphasis is on respiratory testing, electrocardiography procedures, assisting with minor surgical procedures, and sterile technique. Topics also include health screenings, patient education, and health promotion. Prerequisite: Completion of MEDA 1520. (1.5 lect., 3 lab.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Prepare instruments for the sterilization process.

2. Manage a sterile field.

3. Identify instruments used in specialty and minor surgical procedures.

4. Demonstrate a dressing change and wound care.

5. Perform basic EKG procedures.

6. Demonstrate appropriate follow-up for normal and abnormal EKG tracings.

7. Perform respiratory testing procedures.

8. Discuss assessment findings and follow-up in a medical emergency.

9. Educate the patient in methods of health promotion and disease prevention.

10. Discuss dietary and nutritional needs.
