EQST 1670 Training the Roping Horse I

This course focuses on the study of conformation and breed characteristics desirable in the roping horse. Included in the course is the examination of various types of equipment and correct fittings for both the horse and rider. Methods of starting the horse on cattle are covered. The student must supply a horse and tack for this course. (2 lect., 2 lab)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of horse selection for roping based on conformation, breeding, and genetics.

2. Acquire knowledge of horsemanship and explain how it relates to the amount of relaxation and or pressure to be used in training.

3. Discuss the preferred types of cattle used for the various stages of the horses in training.

4. Apply and analyze correct position of horse and rider while trailing, leaving the roping box, and when throwing the rope.
