EQST 1510 Equine Nutrition

A study of feed compositions, ration balancing, carbohydrates, proteins, minerals and vitamins, figuring Total Digestible Nutrients (TDNs) as they relate to horses. Mineral and vitamin supplements and additives will also be figured. (3 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Give examples of the evolutionary adaptations of the equine as a grazing animal

2. Develop a working vocabulary of anatomical, nutritional and medical terminology

3. Recognize sound equine management practices

4. Recall the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system

5. Relate the nutrients required for equine health to their sources in the diet

6. Evaluate and formulate rations for all classes of horses
