EDEL 2140 Teaching Literacy in the Elem School

This course acquaints the student with basic assumptions underlying curriculum and processes in literacy and gives the student an opportunity to select and use instructional materials. Prerequisites: Completion of ENGL 1010, and either EDFD 2020 or EDEC 1020 (3 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Explain theories of language development as the foundation for literacy.

2. Identify the components of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

3. Analyze the fundamental characteristics of common approaches to literacy instruction.

4. Explain stages of emergent literacy and writing, including the levels of phonological awareness.

5. Identify strategies and materials to teach literacy, vocabulary, word recognition, fluency, and comprehension.

6. Demonstrate skills in planning, implementing, and evaluating appropriate literacy experiences.
