CRMJ 1020 Intro to Policing

This course focuses on the roles, duties and responsibilities of the police officer, particularly the uniformed patrol officer. It examines the distribution of police officers and the management and supervision of those officers, as well as the organization of police departments, the selection of police officers, police operations and critical issues in policing today. (3 lect.)

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Explain how law enforcement departments are organized; emphasizing personnel, geography, time and functions.

2. Evaluate management and supervision policies applicable to law enforcement.

3. Analyze the duties and responsibilities of law enforcement personnel, especially the uniformed patrol officer.

4. Identify forms of police misconduct and the ethical dilemmas confronting law enforcement officers.

5. Examine physical and mental requirements for a law enforcement professional.

6. Examine the concept of stress and methods of dealing with it.

7. Compare and contrast the types of patrol methods and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

8. dentify employment standards and requirements of the law enforcement professional.

9. Analyze the relationship of law enforcement to other legal, social, political and economic institutions and to the general public.

10. Examine the legal rights, duties, responsibilities, and obligations of law enforcement and explain basic criminal law as it applies to law enforcement

11. Evaluate the latest technological advances in policing including the use of computers and other technology in police operations, criminal investigations and police management.
