COMM 1480 Media Arts:

This course explores a specific genre in media. The selected genre will be examined, in both depth and scope with an eye, to its relevance to human experience. The course is an analysis of how the genre both reflects and impacts humanity. The chosen genre will be analyzed from a number of angles including: motion images (film, TV), literature (novels, short stories, comic books), new media (video games, AR and VR). A student may apply no more than six credits toward graduation. The specific topic will be named after the colon. (3 lect.) HUM

Outcomes

In order to successfully complete this course, the student will:

1. Analyze the genre to identify its cultural, historical and artistic origins and impact.

2. Identify the conventions and tropes associated with the genre and how they reflect human experience.

3. Describe the variations in the genre as they relateto different geographical and cultural regions.

4. Summarize the distinctions in the genre across multiple platforms; i.e. movies, literature, video games, etc.

5. Write an analysis of a specific example within the genre identifying its status within the genre and within media as a whole.

6. Create an original product that fits within. the genre.
