Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Certificate
The certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) focuses on theory-to-practice preparation for teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL). It is similar to programs in TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language). TESL is recognized as a preparation for ESL teachers who are based in an anglophone country, whereas TEFL is recognized as the preferred preparation for ESL teachers who teach overseas where English is not a dominant language. There are numerous examples of TEFL certificate programs at other institutions given the large demand for ESL teachers overseas. Like similar programs, the WLU TEFL certificate can stand alone or be taken along with any major degree and is not a WV K-12 licensure. In the TEFL certificate program, students build competency in English language structure, pedagogical expertise, and advanced cultural awareness.
