POLS 4357 Urban Sustainability

As city leaders embrace sustainability in planning processes, what are the challenges and constraints they face? Who are the most powerful actors and what do they want? In this course we explore the strategies used by governments and non-governmental activists to develop and implement urban sustainability. Themes discussed include public transportation, distributed energy, green space and biodiversity, sanitation and pollution prevention, building design, and theories of urban politics and planning. The objective is to familiarize students with the issues encompassed by urban sustainability and the process through which it is implemented. This course will be cross-listed as a graduate course.
