MUSI 1308 Music History and Literature I

A historical survey of Western musical tradition from the earliest known sources through the 16th century. The overall objective is for the student to gain an understanding of basic developments in Western music from Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The course will include a study of styles and genres, and will place emphasis on listening, formal structure and musical analysis. The course is also designed to increase the students' critical thinking skills and ability to write effectively about the aesthetics of Western Music. 2nd of 4 courses in Music History, Literature and Culture sequence for majors. Meets the requirements for the Creative Arts in the General Education Core.
