VART 142 Introduction to Anishinaabe Mazinibii’igan (Art)

This course will provide an understanding of art in the Turtle Mountains as well as art from other tribes in North America. This course will also provide an understanding on how western society has influenced the art world regarding identity of North American Indigenous people, including the identity of the Turtle Mountain people. Art and tribal identity will be a part of lecture, research, and discussion in class. Students will learn the difference between authentic and generic art and how it relates or does not relate to Indigenous identity. This course will also introduce and discuss how the pow-wow has had a major influence on fashion and art and how fashion and art can co-exist in any modern society.
